U-M statement regarding false Facebook page

U-M statement regarding false Facebook page
Nov. 25, 2015

This morning, we became aware of a Facebook page purportedly created by a group called the White Student Union. There is no such recognized student organization on the University of Michigan campus.

As reported this week in the New York Times, more than 30 such pages have been created, falsely representing universities across the country.

We reached out to Facebook this morning to report the unauthorized use of the university’s trademarked seal and expressed our concern that the intent of the page also violates their platform’s terms of service. At this time Facebook has confirmed that it is working to address this issue for U-M and our peer institutions.

We affirm the importance of the First Amendment and the rights of all people to express their views, even when those opinions may offend others.  Our view is that this posting does not contribute to a thoughtful dialogue. The University of Michigan is striving to create a climate of inclusion, where all our students, faculty, and staff feel they belong.  We want to take this moment to reaffirm our deep and abiding commitment to this goal, and to working diligently, with the entire university community, to achieve it.
