Chalked messages on the Diag

April 7, 2016

Chalking with water-soluble chalk is allowed on sidewalks and plazas that are part of the University of Michigan campus. Chalking is prohibited on other university property including buildings, columns, seating walls, steps and other surfaces, structures and fixtures. The policy regarding chalking is included as part of the overall policy on the use of the central-campus Diag and can be found here.

On the evening of March 30, someone used chalk to write a #stopislam message on the Diag. The university issued the following statement at that time:

University statement

Attacks directed toward any member or group within the University of Michigan community, based on a belief or characteristic, are inconsistent with our values of respect, civility and equality.

We all understand that where speech is free it will sometimes wound.

But our message is this: We are fully committed to fostering an environment that is welcoming and inclusive of everyone. Tonight we are reminded there is much work yet to be done.
