DACA renewal eligibility continues

June 23, 2017

An FAQ posted June 15 on the Department of Homeland Security website states that current DACA recipients “will continue to be eligible for renewal” under “the terms of the original DACA program” as outlined by the Obama administration memorandum of June 15, 2012.

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, known as DACA, protects eligible undocumented students from deportation and provides them with work permits so they can find legal employment.

The White House and DHS have stated, however, that this is not a permanent decision, and that there could still be changes.

In January, U-M President Mark Schlissel, and more than 600 other college leaders, signed a letter of support for DACA.  The University of Michigan, along with most of higher education, has been a strong supporter of the program.

The university values the global community that has been created on the U-M campus, with students from all corners of the state, from across the nation and around the globe. U-M is committed to the success of every student and remains vigilant in protecting their ability to achieve their educational goals.
