We awoke this morning to a sea change in our political landscape, one that many longtime historical observers did not foresee. As you no doubt have observed in conversations with your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and even perhaps passersby on the street this morning, the mix of satisfaction and disappointment that goes with any election seems amplified this time by the contentious nature of the campaign over the last 18 months.
Whether we as individuals are pleased or unhappy with the outcome, it seems especially important after this election that we honor the outcome and move forward in an intelligent, thoughtful and constructive way with respect for each other.
We must openly and honestly acknowledge – and empathize with – the fear that some members of our School of Dentistry community feel after months of political discourse designed to marginalize certain groups within American society.
As momentous as this election change has become, some things remain the same: We are steadfast in our commitment to civility, inclusion and respect as we at the School of Dentistry continue our quest of advancing health through education, service, research and discovery. That mission, always with an eye toward excellence of the highest order, is a steadying force no matter the political change taking place around us.
I encourage everyone here at the school to be open, honest and respectful in your discussions of this unique moment in the history of our nation. We must remain vigilant and engaged to make sure our form of government remains the most open, free and progressive in the world.
