The sun came up today after a really tough election. It has been a long process with lots of very strong and divergent opinions, and it will take some time to understand all this means for our community. Now it is time to listen, learn, and come together. The power of our democracy has been our ability to choose our leaders and then unite around common purpose.

UM-Flint has always been and remains a place that welcomes and provides opportunity for everyone regardless of status, identity, or background. We are committed to these values and to our mission to advance knowledge and provide an outstanding education that transforms the life path of our students. This will continue to be a place where each of you is valued and where you can thrive.

Several groups have come together to offer support to one another. We understand students are planning a vigil at 8 p.m. tonight (Nov. 9) in McKinnon Plaza. The Ellen Bommarito LGBTQ Center, Women’s Educational Center and Intercultural Center are available as safe spaces and staff remain available all day as needed.

Other resources we are aware of include counseling services for students through CAPS. The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program also is available, which will help put you in touch with a counseling provider in your area and that accepts your insurance, at 734- 936-8660.

Additionally, the Diversity Council is hosting a Post-Election Conversation Nov. 15, 4-6 p.m., in Room 111 of French Hall.  This discussion session is open to all students, faculty and staff.
